The Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) online admissions system is closed. The department will now undertake the task of placing learners at schools in the province.
Parents will receive school placement offers from the department from 3 October 2022. These offers will be sent to the cellphone number provided by parents during the application process. They will have 7 days to accept a placement offer.
The GDE explained, “Placement offers will be sent to the cellphone number the parent/guardian registered with from 3 October 2022 to 30 November 2022.”
Several documents are required when submitting a school application in Gauteng. The GDE urged parents to upload these documents or physically submit them at all schools they applied to within 7 school days. The deadline for this will be 30 August 2022.
As of Friday 19 August 2022, the GDE’s online admissions system recorded 748 485 applications. The department received 323 294 Grade 1 placement applications while the remaining 448 168 applications were made for Grade 8 placement.
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the Online Admissions System successfully facilitated a large number of school applications. They added that they received a low amount of complaints from individuals using the system to submit applications.
Lesufi said, “We are proud that our innovative Online Admissions System has managed to successfully facilitate such a high number of applications. We have also noted a significantly low amount of complaints from applicants, which is a testament to the system’s constant improvement.”
The GDE explained that five factors are considered by the department when placing a learner. These factors include if the learner's home address is located in the school’s feeder zone, if siblings attend the school, the parents’ work address, and if the school is within or beyond a 30 KM radius of the learner's home address.
