Finding a job can be difficult, so most of us jump at the opportunity and accept the first job we get, and we tend to stay in the same industry for quite some time. And, after a while, we've advanced too far to consider starting all over again at the bottom.
The thing is, you’re not going to be happy if you’re in the wrong career. If you hate your job, it’s going to make you miserable. If you think this may be the case for you, then here are three signs it’s time to look at alternatives.
You count down the hours
If you sit at your desk and watch the clock all the day, you may have a problem. If you count down the minutes until you can get away with leaving the office, then this may be a sign that this career just isn not for you.
Someone who is happy in their job doesn’t look at the time all day. They’re too busy enjoying what they do, coming up with ideas and producing great work.
You mock the work you do
When you tell people what you do, you make fun of it. You say things like, “Yeah, really changing the world here” with words dripping in sarcasm. If you’re doing this, it means you don’t respect your job and it probably affects the way you feel about yourself. And if you don’t respect your job it means you won’t do your best to perfect it.
You make bad decisions
If you lose interest in what you’re doing, you’re eventually going to stop caring. Which means you’re going to start making bad decisions. This could be a huge problem in a job where you have to make decisions on a daily basis. You may not think that what you do matters to the rest of the company but you are part of a whole and when you make an error, it could affect the entire company.
If you identify with these points then it may be time to consider a career move. Whether you want to move from being a car salesman in Namibia to learn the basics of share trading in South Africa or go from working in journalism to advertising, it may seem like a major jump. But sometimes it’s worth the risk. You should work in a job that for the most part, you are excited about doing.
