Conveyancing and Notarial Courses
GENERAL
In the past Continuing Legal Education and Practical Legal Training both offered courses in conveyancing and notarial practice. With the amalgamation of these two sections into Legal Education and Development, it was decided to
rationalise these offerings and draft one set of study documents from the best of the distance education and the attendance courses.
The aim of these courses is to prepare attorneys for the profession?s conveyancing and notarial practice examinations and to provide a practical background for the work of conveyancers and notaries.
Training is provided by practising conveyancers and notaries who also drafted the course material. In both the distance education and attendance
courses, mere attendance of lectures/workshops, and completing the assignments will not be sufficient to pass the examinations. Intense study and diligent practise in the drafting of deeds by the learner, as well as participation in class
discussion and workshops, are essential.
Attorneys and candidate attorneys may register for these courses as well as any others who wish to learn more about these fields of practice, although the offices of Conveyancer and Notary are reserved for admitted attorneys.
People who are not attorneys or candidate attorneys must first contact a provincial Law Society in their jurisdiction to enquire whether they will be allowed to write the national conveyancing/notarial exam before they register for the course(s).
Once the learner has registered for a course and the documentation has been dispatched he/she will be liable for the full course fees.
Our courses are offered at such competitive prices because they are subsidised by the Attorneys Fidelity Fund.
Amendments or cancellation of enrolment
It is the duty of the learner to inform L.E.A.D
immediately and in writing of any change of
address. L.E.A.D will not accept any responsibility
for course material and other documentation
which is lost if we are not timeously informed of
such changes.
Notice of cancellation must be given in writing. If
received before dispatching of documentation an
admin fee of 10% will be charged, but if received
after the documentation has been posted, learners
will be held liable for the full cost of the course.
SASSETA accreditation
The LSSA is an accredited provider.
Language medium
The documentation and instruction will be in
English, though the assignments may be
completed in either English or Afrikaans.
CORRESPONDENCE (DISTANCE
EDUCATION) COURSES
The courses in conveyancing and notarial practice will be offered by correspondence for those who cannot attend lectures. After the closing date,
learners will be sent study documents and are required to complete four assignments which will be marked and returned to them with model
answers. There will also be one or two attendance workshops offered in the main centres depending on demand. A R200 petrol allowance will be made available to those who will have to travel more than 200km to the venue closest to their
place of residence.
L.E.A.D reserves the right to cancel a workshop if
the number of registrations does not justify the cost.
Certificates
A certificate is issued to the effect that the course was successfully completed if all the assignments were submitted.

ATTENDANCE COURSES
Attendance courses are offered in various centres throughout the country provided
there is sufficient interest to make the offering financially viable. Conveyancing
Attendance Courses are held over 10 or 20 sessions respectively, depending on the
centre. Notarial Practice Attendance Courses are held over 5 sessions. These
Course timelines are structured around the two sets of examinations in May/June
and September/October respectively.
Conveyancing Exam Preparation Seminar
In an effort to constantly help improve on the Conveyancing exam results,
LSSA-L.E.A.D has introduced a new 3-day exam preparation seminar. This will take
place at centres where there is enough indicated interest amongst instructors and
prospective participants. These will only be held at the end of the normal 10 and
20 sessions at respective centres.
Please note that this is NOT a replacement of our currently running 10 and 20
Lecture Sessions in respective centres, but an added programme which will solely
focus on the exam preparation.
Who should register?
? Preferably people who have attended either the 10 or 20 session courses
respectively which took place in the current or previous years.
? Those people who by precept of The Attorneys Act, 53 of 1979,
are allowed to register for the examination [2 14(13)]
? Those who are in the Correspondence / Distance learning courses.
