Across the globe skilled trades people are in high demand.

In South Africa there is an even greater need for experienced and qualified artisans to carry out the national development plans. This need has prompted government to fund and support artisan training.

But what does it mean to be a tradesman or woman?

The video”Consider a Career in the Skilled Trades” highlights some of the attributes of trades people and the work that they do.

The Mark of an Artisan

Do you like to work with your hands and solve problems?

Not everyone belongs behind a desk. “In fact many trades people prefer to be actively engaged in their day-to-day work.”

“Trades people use the latest technology and tools to turn plans into reality.” They thrive on finding practical solutions to real world problems and experience a sense of accomplishment from seeing their ideas come to life.

“Mechanical ability, good hand-eye co-ordination and strong math skills are a great foundation for success in the trades.”

What are the Career Opportunities?

Artisans can use their creativity and skills to develop infrastructure on a national scale, or to deliver basic services. In other words they “keep the lights on, the water flowing and our homes heated.”

However the career opportunities do not stop there. Once certified artisans can also become instructors, supervisors and inspectors.

They can practice their craft in major organisations or as private contractors.
