The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has announced the official start date for the 2023 tax season for individuals. According to the information provided on the SARS website, tax season will commence on 7 July 2023.
While a closing date for filing returns has not yet been announced, SARS has assured taxpayers that more information will follow in due course.
In preparation for the upcoming tax season, SARS plans to pre-populate certain tax returns with relevant information. However, it should be noted that the details may not be comprehensive until the Filing Season is officially opened to the public.
This move aims to simplify the process for taxpayers and streamline the submission of tax returns.
Similar to the previous year, individuals with less complex tax affairs can expect to have their returns automatically assessed, as has been the case in previous years.
The introduction of auto-assessments in the 2022 tax year has proven to be highly successful in handling tax returns efficiently and accurately.
Here's How The Auto-Assessment Process works
Auto-assessments are applicable only to non-provisional taxpayers who are typically formally employed individuals.
SARS will notify the taxpayer via SMS and/or email regarding the auto-assessment.
If the auto-assessment results in a refund for the taxpayer, the amount will be paid within 72 business hours. However, if there are outstanding amounts due to SARS, they must be paid by the due date specified on the assessment.
If the taxpayer is satisfied with the auto-assessment and the proposed outcome, no further action is required.
However, if the taxpayer disagrees with the assessment results or believes that there is missing or inaccurate information, they must submit a revised tax return to SARS within 40 business days from the date of the auto-assessment notification.
Available Options For Filing Tax Returns
SARS encourages taxpayers to utilize electronic channels, such as SARS eFiling and the SARS MobiApp to handle their tax filing matters. These online platforms provide convenience and efficiency in managing tax affairs.
Taxpayers can also make an appointment with SARS through the official SARS website, request a booking via SMS, or contact the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277, selecting option 0 (zero). A SARS official will then assist in scheduling the appointment.
As the tax season approaches, individuals are advised to gather the necessary documentation and ensure that their financial records are in order. Adhering to the stipulated timelines and utilizing the available electronic resources will facilitate a smoother and more efficient tax filing process.
It is essential for taxpayers to stay updated with the latest information provided by SARS regarding the closing date for submissions and any additional requirements.
By fulfilling their tax obligations promptly and accurately, individuals contribute to the functioning of the country's revenue system, which in turn supports the provision of essential public services and development initiatives.
