The council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, Umalusi, has called on potential applicants who want to replace their lost Matric certificates to apply directly on the Umalusi website.

In a statement on Wednesday, Umalusi said that it wishes to clarify the procedure that should be followed by interested applicants to access the service, following the media statement released on 31 March 2023 regarding the new Online Application System for Replacement Certificates.

It is a common occurrence for a Matric certificate to be misplaced, either by the learner or in the system, but luckily there is the option to apply for a replacement.

According to Umalusi:

Since the launch of the system, Umalusi has been inundated with calls and emails from potential applicants wanting to apply either telephonically or via email. Process wise, interested applicants should apply directly online (on the website) by visiting the Umalusi website.

The quality assurer said that this online service is meant only for lost or damaged certificates issued by Umalusi or its predecessor, SAFCERT, since 1992.

Applicants may apply for a replacement of any one of the following certificates:

  • National Certificate Vocational
  • National Certificate (N3)
  • National Senior Certificate
  • Senior Certificate
  • General and Further Education Certificate
  • Amended Senior Certificate
  • ABET Level 4

How To Apply For A Replacement Certificate:

  1. Visit the Umalusi website
  2. Create an account.
  3. Create a request.
  4. Select the qualification you are applying for.
  5. Upload required documentation.
  6. Choose a delivery method.

The following documents may be uploaded to the online system:

  • Signed affidavit from a police station - Stating the status of the original certificate, e.g., stolen or lost in a move.
  • Certified copy of candidate’s identity document (ID) - This copy must be certified by a commissioner of oaths.

Applicants may choose to collect the certificate from the Umalusi Pretoria Office or have it sent to their homes via courier service. Courier delivery is available at an additional cost.

Candidates are notified that they will need to pay a fee for the certificate.

Those who choose to collect the certificate from Umalusi will need to pay R137 for the certificate, whereas those who are having it delivered to a physical address within the borders of South Africa will need to pay R202, which includes the courier fees.

Applicants who experience any challenges with the online system are encouraged to email Umalusi, via the address as follows: [email protected].
