The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has called on all R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant beneficiaries to collect their money before the upcoming deadline.
SASSA announced earlier this year that SRD grant beneficiaries will have up until Tuesday, 30 November 2021 to collect their unclaimed grants from the first cycle of grant payments. These grants must be collected from the Post Office.
They said, ‘Approved applicants of the special COVID-19 SRD Grant, whose unclaimed funds from the first round of the grant were to be forfeited on 31 August 2021, can still collect their unclaimed funds at the Post Office’.
SASSA CEO Busisiwe Memela-Khambula acknowledged that the SRD grant assists the most vulnerable in our society. She therefore praised Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu for taking the decision to allow grant recipients to collect their unclaimed grants.
The SRD grant was introduced in May 2020 with the aim of assisting unemployed individuals during the Covid-19 lockdowns. The grant was reintroduced in August 2021 and is expected to end in March 2022.
Unions have called for the extension of the SRD grant and for the value of the grant to be increased to the poverty line.
