The National State of Disaster will be coming to an end soon declared President Cyril Ramaphosa during his sixth State Of The Nation Address.

The president has declared that he intends to end the National State of Disaster in South Africa. He explained that this will be done as soon as new legislation has been finalised to manage the pandemic

He said, “It is our clear intention to end the National State of Disaster after implementing new regulations”

The president says the government's approach to responding to the Covid-19 pandemic has always been guided by science. He revealed that more than 42% of adults living in South Africa have been vaccinated against the virus.

He said, "We are now ready to enter a new phase in our management of the pandemic. It is my intention to end the national state of disaster as soon as we have finalised other measures under the National Health Act and other legislation to contain the pandemic.”

The current state of disaster was set expire on 15 February 2022 after the latest extension. This would have been the 22nd month that the country would have been under a state of disaster.

There is a popular saying that reads ‘Hindsight is always 20/20’ which argues that it's easier to understand something after it has already happened.

However, nothing could have prepared the president, or the world, for what was to come a few months later. The National State Of Disaster allowed the government to introduce a number of measures and regulations to help combat the pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns resulted in many livelihoods being lost in the country and took away the opportunity for people to find work.

It is estimated that around 2 million jobs were lost during the pandemic.
