Just under half of South Africa’s population are recipients of social grants, putting the number of recipients above 27.8 million people.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) distributes these social relief and support grants on behalf of the South African government. These grants include the older persons grant, child support grant, care dependency grant, disability grant and the war veterans grant.

SASSA also distributes the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. This is the only government that unemployed citizens between the ages of 18 and 59 years old have access to. However the grant support is expected to come to an end in March 2022.
There have been growing calls from various sectors of society and unions to extend the implementation of the SRD grant. The introduction of a Basic Income Grant (BIG) has also been discussed as an alternative to the SRD. Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu says the possibility of a BIG grant will be explored in order to support citizens.
