As of 1 April 2023, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has increased the payment of permanent social grants that it provides to qualifying individuals. The new amounts are set to provide much-needed relief for many of the country's most vulnerable citizens.

According to Sassa's official website, the agency has increased the grant amounts for several different types of grants. The Older Persons grant, which was previously set at R1,990, has been increased to R2,080. This includes an additional payment of R20, which brings the total payment to R2,090 from October 2023.

For beneficiaries who are over 75 years old, there will be an additional payment of R20 per month. This means that the Older Persons aged above 75 years grant has been increased from R1,990 + R20 to R2,080 + R20, and will be R2,090 + R20 from October 2023.

The War Veterans’ grant, which also includes an additional payment, has been increased from R1,990 + R20 to R2,080 + R20, and will be R2,090 + R20 from October 2023.

Individuals who receive the Disability grant and the Care Dependency grant will now receive R2,080 per month, an increase from the previous amount of R1,990.

The Foster Child grant has been increased from R1,070 to R1,120, with an additional increase of R10 from October 2023, bringing the total payment to R1,130.

The Child Support grant has also been increased, from R480 to R500. This includes an additional payment of R10, bringing the total payment to R510 from October 2023.

For those who receive the Child Support (Top-Up) grant, the new payment amount is R500 + R250, an increase from the previous amount of R480 + R240. This will be increased to R510 + R250 from October 2023.

Finally, the Grant-in-Aid has been increased from R480 to R500, with an additional increase of R10 from October 2023, bringing the total payment to R510.

It is also just as important for beneficiaries to familiarise themselves with the agency's payment schedule, as grant payments for April will be made on the dates listed below.

Permanent Social Grant Schedule For April 2023

  • Older Persons Grant: 3 April
  • Disability Grant: 4 April
  • Child Support Grant (and all other grants): 5 April

The increase in grants is a much-needed relief for many South Africans who rely on these payments to make ends meet. With the rising cost of living and economic instability in the country, these increases will provide some much-needed financial support for vulnerable individuals and families.
