The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) uses an online admissions system to capture and process school applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placement applications. This online admissions period closed on 19 August 2022.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said that the system recorded more than 600 000 unique placement applications for public schools in the province. These applications will now undergo a placement process to ensure that learners have a space in a school in the 2023 school year.

Five factors are considered by the department when placing a learner. These factors are based on whether the learner's home address is located in the school’s feeder zone, if siblings attend the school, the parents’ work address, and if the school is within or beyond a 30 KM radius of the learner's home address.
