The Time Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings released last week revealed that UJ has ranked 69 out of 1 406 institutions. The rankings mean that UJ has climbed up by 23 places from position 92 in the world in last year’s 2021 edition.
This year's ranking included 289 more institutions than the 2021 edition which highlights the progress made by the Johannesburg-based institution.
The “THE Impact Rankings” assesses universities' progress concerning the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
These development goals aim to end poverty and hunger and realise the rights of all human beings. It also looks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The final goals aim to ensure the lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources.
UJ ranked third in the world for SDG 1 which is No Poverty and eighth in the world for SDG 8 which looks to create Decent Work and Economic Growth. The university also ranked in the top 100 universities for 7 of the SDG’s.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Maria Frahim-Arp says the university is very pleased by the results and acknowledges that it's something that the university has been working towards.
She said, “For us, this particular ranking is so important because it's wonderful to have great ideas but it's even more fantastic when your good ideas and your research actually have an impact on society”.
