In 2021, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) revealed that 4.4 million adults in South Africa were illiterate. The department wanted to empower these individuals with the skills needed to fully participate in society.

Community Education and Training (CET) centres offer Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET). The ABET curriculum aims to provide individuals with basic learning tools, knowledge and skills, and upon completion provides participants with nationally recognised qualifications.

There are four levels of ABET courses. Once a client has completed ABET level 4, they can register to participate in an examination to obtain a Grade 12 qualification or equivalent.

The Highest ABET level an individual can achieve is an ABET level 4. An ABET Level 4 is equivalent to a Grade 9 qualification.

Here's What ABET Level Courses Are Equal To In Traditional Schools

ABET Level 1 = Grade 3

ABET Level 2 = Grade 5

ABET Level 3 = Grade 7

ABET Level 4 = Grade 9

There are nine CET centres in South Africa, one in each province. However, there are many satellite campuses in communities around the country where you can do ABET courses.
