The Department of Basic Education (DBE) established the Senior Certificate (SC) for adults who are 21 years and older in South Africa. The SC serves as an alternative, but equivalent to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) learners obtain after completing their Grade 12 examinations.
Introduced in 2015 as a replacement for the previous Senior Certificate, the SC qualification utilises the NSC subjects, mirroring the National Senior Certificate (NSC) structure but excluding School-Based Assessment (SBA).
Who Can Register For A Senior Certificate
Individuals who have not completed their NSC can register for the SC examinations as well as individuals who want to improve their results.
When Are SC/Adult Matric Exams?
SC or Adult matric exams are normally written during the May/June matric exam period.
Which Subjects Are Offered?
The DBE offers a list of 34 adapted NSC subjects for the SC exams. It's important to note that this excludes practical subjects.
Candidates must take 6 subjects to qualify for the SC exams.

2025 SC Adult Matric Exams
Registration for 2025 exams opens online and at district offices. The deadline to register for the 2025 exams is 7 February 2025.
Individuals with a previous matric certificate can use the SC to improve their university entrance prospects. Additionally, learners can combine previous SC results with new ones to meet qualification requirements, though subject compatibility is essential.
For those who have already passed sufficient subjects, applying for a combination of results might be an option. However, it's important to note that the SC does not include subjects with practical components.
Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) for subjects are available online or at education offices. The DBE also provides exam guidelines and sample question papers which candidates can use to prepare for the exams.
