Performance Management
Grow business by developing people
03-MAR-10

Every company needs the support of an inspired and motivated team in order to function effectively. When a team feels acknowledged and appreciated it becomes a valuable asset to the future success of any organisation.

Every business leader has the invigorating challenge to get his or her team to perform at their highest level to achieve the strategic objectives of the business.

Performance management is a development toolkit that enables individuals in the workplace to hone work-skills and to reach their full potential, satisfying their personal ambitions while increasing business profit.

The application of performance management in the workplace will create an environment that will energise and develop business teams because:

• Work is planned with set expectations for each employee

• Work performance is monitored

• Staff ability to perform is developed and enhanced

• Performance is rated or measured and the ratings summarized

• The progress of achieving predetermined goals are continually assessed

• Top performance is rewarded

• All of the above is communicated interactively

A performance management system requires the co-ordination of multiple key practices to evolve into an effective one.

Firstly, a key practice that may seem obvious but is often overlooked is the creation of an environment conducive to performance management success.

Is the culture of the organisation one of success? Do employees feel that they are in a positively challenging environment that encourages them to give their best?

Secondly it is important that a clearly defined performance management plan is rolled out across the entire organisation.

Next the mission and vision for each department or business unit has to be mapped out. This allows staff to understand the importance of each of their roles and why they need to perform at their best.

Job descriptions, which include key performance areas and measures for success, are designed if not already available. This defines the scope of work and employer expectations as well as the opportunity to reward employees when they exceed expectations.

Proper planning and preparation for performance assessments/reviews are crucial to ensure an accurate assessment of the employee’s performance and personal growth.

Be sure to create an environment where the employee can feel comfortable to give their honest opinion about their performance as well as the performance management system/process. Employees also value a personal development plan that promotes continuous improvement.
