The Department of Basic Education in Limpopo has urged all parents and guardians to apply to schools early to avoid disappointments with late applications.
The application period for prospective Grade 1 and 8 learners in Limpopo opened on Monday, 15 May 2023.
The Limpopo MEC for education, Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya noted that if a child is going to school for the first time or moving to a new school, registration forms must be collected from the school:
- Nearest to the parent’s home
- Where other siblings are attending
- Nearest to parent’s work address
- School of choice
Parents and legal guardians of qualifying learners are therefore encouraged to immediately collect registration forms from the school nearest to their home, where other siblings are attending or within a feeder zone.
Age of Learner
In terms of the South African Schools Act (SASA), as amended, children may be registered in terms of the following age requirements:
- Grade R: 4 years turning 5 years old on or before 30 June 2024
- Grade 1: 5 years turning 6 years old on or before 30 June 2024
The department affirmed that they would make sure that every learner is admitted for the 2024 school year.
School principals have been urged to accommodate learners in line with the carrying capacity of their schools; this appeal is made in line with the department’s efforts in trying to curb overcrowding.
Documents To Submit
Before starting the application process, parents are advised to gather all the necessary documents and information required for the application process.
These certified documents need to be submitted:
- Birth certificate (Note that baptismal certificates will not be regarded as proof of birth date)
- Immunisation card; and
- Transfer card or last school report card for learners who have been to school previously.
Additional documents required if the learner is not a South African citizen are:
- Study Permit
- Temporary or permanent residence permit from the Department of Home Affairs; or
- Evidence that you have applied for permission to stay in South Africa
Ramakhanya stressed, “Completed forms must be returned as soon as possible, as admissions will be processed on a first come, first served basis, assuming that all other criteria in the admissions guidelines are met.”
The 2024 Limpopo admissions will close on the 30th of September 2023.
