The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) saw a surge in applications for Grade 1 and 8 in 2025. The deadline to apply on time has passed, but don't worry - you can still submit a late application.
The WCED received over 100 000 applications for Grade 1 and 8 placements. This represents a significant increase compared to the on-time applications received last year.
Parents will begin receiving placement offers from 30 May 2024. However, it may take some time before all learners are placed.
Parents who do not receive an offer on 30 May 2024 should not be disheartened: places always open up as parents confirm their final choices.
Missed the Deadline? Apply Late!
The WCED is accepting late applications until 12 May 2024. However, these will be processed only after on-time applications.
Applications for Grade R and transfers for Grades 2-7 and 9-11 will be open from 1 August to 16 August 2024.
Parents will still be able to capture late applications on the online system until 12 May 2024, but they will be flagged as late applications.
The WCED encourages parents who relocate to the Western Cape to contact district education offices for assistance.
Parents who relocate to the Western Cape after the late application window closes or those who did not apply earlier for any reason must contact their district office as soon as possible for assistance. The WCED encourages applying early to avoid any last-minute complications.
