The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has officially opened applications for Phase 5 of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI), offering youth across South Africa the opportunity to apply for teaching assistant positions.

This phase targets individuals aged 18–34 (turning 35 by March 2026) and aims to create over 200,000 jobs, following the success of previous phases which provided more than one million work opportunities.

Applications opened on 22 April 2025 and will close on 9 May 2025. All applications must be submitted via the SAYouth.mobi platform, the only official channel for recruitment. The platform is zero-rated, requiring no mobile data to access.

Candidates will receive a monthly stipend of R4,000 for six months, plus R30 for data. A Police Clearance Certificate will be required during the application process.

The initiative is funded by the National Treasury and Unemployment Insurance Fund, with UIF funds managed by the Industrial Development Corporation. For guidance on applications and CV creation, visit this article.

Applicants are warned against using unofficial platforms, as scammers have previously exploited the programme to steal personal information.
