Millions of South Africans will see an increase in their social grants starting in October 2024, according to the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). The agency explained that the adjustments are in line with government efforts to safeguard the value of grants against inflation.

Sassa provides monthly financial assistance to over 18 million permanent grant recipients, while an additional 8 million individuals benefit from the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant.

Permanent grants distributed by Sassa include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.

During the annual budget speech, the Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana announced grant payment value adjustments. These adjustments are small increases to protect the value of grants against inflation.

The latest increases include an additional R10 for the Older Persons, Disability, War Veterans, and Child Support Top-Up grants.

Clarification on Sassa’s Role

Paseka Letsatsi, Sassa’s spokesperson, clarified that the agency’s role is limited to managing grant distribution. Decisions on the amount of the increases are determined by the Department of Social Development and National Treasury. Despite criticism of the R10 increase, Letsatsi highlighted that small increases add up when applied across millions of recipients.

The total budget for social grants stands at R265 billion.
