The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) offers the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant to assist unemployed individuals with no other source of income. This guide explains the eligibility criteria and application process for August 2024.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for the R370 grant, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or special permit holder.
- Not be receiving other government financial support, such as Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) benefits or National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) bursaries.
- Have less than R624 in your bank account.
How to Apply For The SRD Grant
- Visit the SRD Grant website (https://srd.sassa.gov.za/).
- At the bottom of the webpage, choose your citizenship status: "South African ID Holder" or "Asylum Seeker/Special Permit Holder."
- Locate the yellow bar labeled "Click here to apply online" under the corresponding section ("How do I apply for this SRD Grant" or "Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders").
- Enter your mobile phone number and click "Send SMS."
- Enter the one-time pin (OTP) sent by Sassa to your phone for verification.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your application.
How Much is the Grant?
The SRD Grant amount was increased to R370 in April 2024. This is the amount approved beneficiaries will receive in August 2024.
