Millions of unemployed people living in South Africa rely on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to purchase basic goods monthly. The grant is commonly referred to as the R350 grant due to its value.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) pays the R350 grant to more than 7 million people every month. These 7 million people submitted successful applications for the R350 grant.
While the R350 grant serves as a lifeline for millions of unemployed people, many more have applied for the grant but have been rejected from receiving financial support.
Individuals who believe Sassa was wrong to reject their R350 grant application are encouraged to submit an appeal application to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).
Individuals who submitted a R350 grant appeal can check on the progress of their appeal application on the ITSAA website.

What If Your Appeal Application Is Unsuccessful
Unsuccessful appeal applicants have the right to seek judicial review from the high court if they are unhappy with the outcome of their appeal application. This must be done within 180 days of receiving the outcome of the original appeal application.
The decision of the Independent Tribunal is the final decision and no further internal recourse will be available. If the applicant is not satisfied with the decision of the Independent Tribunal, the appellant may approach the High Court for judicial review as provided for in the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act, 2000 within a period of 180 days.
What If Your Appeal Application Is Successful
You will be informed by the ITSAA if the appeal application has been approved. They will receive further information from Sassa about when they can collect their money.
The Independent Tribunal will endeavour to finalise the appeal within 60 - 90 days from the date on which the appeal was received and inform the appellant electronically of the outcome of the appeal and reasons thereof.
Applicants are reminded that an appeal must be logged for every month their application was rejected. The decision of the Independent Tribunal will accordingly only be in respect of the specific month to which the appeal relates.
