Every year, thousands of students across South Africa apply for financial aid through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). While many assume matric completion is mandatory for eligibility, this is not entirely true.
NSFAS comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical And Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
The funding covers tuition and registration fees, along with allowances for essentials such as food, accommodation, and learning materials. This ensures that financially disadvantaged learners can access higher education opportunities without added financial burdens.
Do You Need Matric to Qualify for NSFAS?
Most NSFAS funding is directed at university students, where matric completion is a prerequisite for admission. However, learners without matric can still access NSFAS bursaries by enrolling in certain courses at TVET colleges.
NSFAS-Funded Courses at TVET Colleges
NSFAS funds a range of Ministerial-approved courses offered at TVET colleges. These include programmes in both Engineering Studies and Business and Utility Studies, which cater to students with varying academic backgrounds.
Engineering Studies:
- National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF levels 2-4.
- Report 191 courses from N1 to N6, covering fields like Civil Engineering, Electrical Infrastructure, Information Technology, and Engineering Design.
Business and Utility Studies:
- National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF levels 2-4.
- Report 191 N1 to N6 courses in areas such as Management, Marketing, Office Administration, Finance, Tourism, Hospitality, and Transport & Logistics.
Additionally, NSFAS funds some Pre-Learning Programmes (PLP), which provide foundational skills for further study.
No Matric? No Problem
Many of the TVET courses funded by NSFAS do not require a matric qualification for entry. Learners should consult individual TVET colleges to confirm programme-specific requirements and offerings.
This flexibility makes NSFAS an inclusive funding scheme that caters to a wide range of students, opening pathways to education and skill development for those who may not have completed matric.
Empowering South African Youth
By broadening access to education, NSFAS continues to support South Africa’s youth in building brighter futures. Whether pursuing university degrees or practical courses at TVET colleges, students are encouraged to explore their options and apply for funding that aligns with their career goals.
