The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has made significant progress in addressing the backlog of appeal applications. However, as the academic year draws to a close, several challenges remain for students awaiting funding decisions.
NSFAS provides vital financial assistance to students pursuing tertiary education. While it has helped countless individuals achieve their academic goals, the recent delays in appeal resolutions have caused significant concern.
Thousands of students apply for NSFAS funding annually, and not all applications are successful. Students who are denied funding may submit an appeal.
In response to a parliamentary question, Minister of Higher Education Dr Nobuhle Nkabane revealed that while a significant portion of the 103,071 appeals submitted have been resolved, there is still a backlog of over 16,000 cases.
While we are pleased with the progress made, we understand the urgency of these appeals for students.
NSFAS Appeal Backlog
More than 2,400 NSFAS appeal applications are awaiting review by appeal workers before being referred to team leaders. Team leaders have yet to finalize 1,338 NSFAS appeals.
Around 2,375 appeals are awaiting completion by the ICT system. Universities and TVET colleges are taking time to verify student results for 2,375 appeals.
1,375 students need to upload supporting documents to complete their appeals.
NSFAS has urged students to be patient and cooperative during the appeal process. The agency encourages students to submit all required documentation promptly and institutions to expedite verification processes to minimize delays.
NSFAS provides comprehensive financial assistance to deserving students enrolled in approved courses at South African universities and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. This assistance includes tuition fees, registration costs, and allowances for food, accommodation, and study materials.
