Each month, millions of unemployed individuals in South Africa depend on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to afford essential goods and services. Sassa has now clarified whether reapplying is necessary for May 2025.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) recently reopened applications for the SRD grant for May 2025. However, only specific individuals are required to reapply.

Sassa has confirmed that existing beneficiaries do not need to submit a new application every month for the R370 grant.

Applicants with valid applications from previous months will automatically be considered for future SRD grant payments, including those for May 2025.

The agency has also cautioned against submitting multiple applications, as this could lead to unnecessary delays in payment processing.

SRD Grant Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the SRD grant, applicants must meet specific requirements. This includes being a South African citizen, permanent resident, or special permit holder, and not receiving other forms of government support, such as UIF or NSFAS funding.

Applicants must also have a bank balance below R624 to be eligible for the R370 monthly payment.

Sassa works with the Department of Home Affairs to verify applicants’ identity and citizenship and collaborates with the National Treasury to assess income levels through banking data. Once all criteria are confirmed, payments are processed each month, usually near the end of the month.

Who Should Apply for the May 2025 SRD Grant?

Individuals who have not recently benefited from the SRD grant are encouraged to apply in May. This includes former beneficiaries who previously cancelled their applications and now wish to reapply.
