In  April, the much-awaited increase in the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant came into effect, increasing the grant from R350 to R370. This decision was announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, marking a significant adjustment since the grant's inception in 2020.

In March, Minister Godongwana stated:

Subject to the finalisation of the comprehensive social security, we will increase the R350 [grant] to R370 by the first of April this year.

This 5.7% increment, administered by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), means that the R350 grant is now the R370 grant, representing a notable R20 increase. Consequently, numerous SRD grant beneficiaries are pondering whether they need to reapply or register again for the SRD grant.

Should I Reapply For The SRD Grant?

The increase in the SRD grant has understandably left beneficiaries in a state of uncertainty. However, it's crucial to clarify that existing SRD grant beneficiaries need not reapply or register again for the grant post-increase.

Once an SRD grant application secures approval, no monthly reapplication is needed. The sole scenario necessitating a reapplication is if one's Sassa SRD grant appeal gets rejected.

Sassa proactively conducts monthly evaluations to ascertain continued eligibility.

Through collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs for identity and citizenship verification, and sharing bank details with the Department of Treasury for income validation, Sassa ensures the legitimacy of recipients. Upon satisfaction with eligibility, Sassa proceeds with payments, adhering to the end-of-month payment schedule.
