Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding?
NSFAS prioritizes funding for students from disadvantaged backgrounds who demonstrate academic merit and financial need. To be eligible for an NSFAS loan, you should generally meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Fall within the income threshold: annual household income comes to below R600 000 and above R350 001
- Be enrolling for undergraduate studies for the first time or postgraduate studies.
- Registering at a public university or college in South Africa.
We successfully did this through the implementation of the first phase of the Comprehensive Student Funding Model, which ensures that the missing middle students access financial support from the government in the form of a loan to pursue their studies.
How To Apply For NSFAS Loans
Visit the NSFAS website and initiate the online application process. Carefully follow the instructions and provide accurate information.
Applicants will need to create a myNSFAS account to apply. Once they create their NSFAS account, they should do their NSFAS login and complete their NSFAS application.
Upload all required supporting documents electronically through the NSFAS online portal. It's important to remember that NSFAS won't accept affidavits.
Once you've completed the NSFAS application process, the NSFAS online portal allows you to monitor the progress of your application.
What Does NSFAS Cover?
NSFAS loan funding helps cover the essential costs of higher education:
- Tuition and registration fees
- Learning materials
- Accommodation
NSFAS has clarified that living allowances and transport allowances are not included in the loan coverage.
Students who excel academically and complete their studies on time can enjoy a significant benefit. NSFAS offers a 50% loan forgiveness for those achieving an average of 70% or higher and finishing their studies within the prescribed timeframe.
