The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced the university allowance amounts for September 2024.
NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving students enrolled in accredited programmes at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa.
NSFAS has confirmed that universities will be responsible for distributing student allowances for the remainder of the 2024 academic year. As a result, students attending any of South Africa’s 26 public universities will receive their allowances directly from their respective institutions.
How Much Are NSFAS Allowances?
University students will receive an annual living allowance of R16,500, which includes R3,045 for personal care and R13,455 for meals. Additionally, students are eligible for a learning material allowance of up to R5,460.
Students who opt to live with immediate family or relatives are not eligible for the accommodation allowance. Instead, they may receive a travel allowance determined by their institution, with a maximum amount of R7,875 for 2024.
Special provisions are available for students with disabilities, who receive higher living allowances and an additional learning material allowance.
It is important to note that these are annual amounts. NSFAS divides the total allowance into ten equal instalments.
