The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has officially announced its approved academic pathways for the 2025 academic year. This crucial information outlines the specific educational routes students must follow to maintain their funding eligibility.

What are NSFAS Academic Pathways?

Academic progression refers to advancing from one level of study to the next within the same field. NSFAS recognizes specific pathways at universities and TVET colleges. These pathways determine which courses and qualifications are eligible for funding.

Why are these pathways important?

  • Funding Security: Knowing which pathways are funded helps students make informed decisions about their academic careers.
  • Career Planning: Aligning your chosen courses with funded pathways ensures you can pursue your career goals while receiving financial support.

NSFAS Funding at Universities

NSFAS primarily funds progression from a certificate to an undergraduate degree.

If you've already received NSFAS funding for a certificate, you will not be eligible for funding for another certificate programme.

NSFAS Funding at TVET Colleges

Students can progress from a Pre-Learning Programme (PLP) to a Report 191 Level 1 qualification or an NC(V) Level 2 qualification.

Switching between NC(V) and Report 191 programs, or changing programmes within these categories, can jeopardize your funding eligibility. First-time entrants (FTFs) may change their programme within the first academic term without affecting their funding.

If you complete NC(V) Level 4 or Report 191 N4-N6, you will not be eligible for further NSFAS funding for other NC(V) or Report 191 programmes.
