The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has clarified that beneficiaries of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant do not need to reapply for the R370 grant each month.
According to Sassa, individuals who have already submitted valid applications in previous months are automatically considered for the following months' SRD grant payments. There is no need for beneficiaries to submit new applications every month.
Sassa also cautioned SRD grant applicants against submitting duplicate applications, as the system is designed to process ongoing applications without further action from recipients.
No Need to Reapply Monthly
The agency reiterated that applicants should not reapply each month, as all valid applications from previous months are reviewed on a monthly basis. Sassa advises beneficiaries to remain patient and follow official communications for updates on their application status.
Who Qualifies for SRD Grant Payments?
To qualify for the SRD grant, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria. They must be South African citizens, residents, or special permit holders and should not receive other forms of government support, such as UIF benefits or NSFAS bursaries.
Additionally, applicants' bank accounts must have less than R624 to qualify for the R370 grant.
Sassa works with the Department of Home Affairs to verify identity and citizenship status and shares bank details with the Department of Treasury to confirm income levels. Once eligibility is verified, Sassa processes payments, which follow an end-of-month schedule.
