The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has made an announcement that would allow many of the SRD grant beneficiaries to be able to access the money that is owed to them. SASSA has announced that successful applicants that were approved during the first cycle of SRD grant payments can access their unclaimed money.
The deadline for SRD grant beneficiaries to collect their money from the first cycle was 31 August 2021. SASSA said that these successful candidates can collect their money from the Post Office and collection must be made before 30 November 2021.
SASSA has warned that any money not collected by the deadline will be forfeited. Chief Executive Officer of SASSA Busisiwe Memela-Khambula has welcomed the announcement by Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu.
Memela-Khambula said, “we also acknowledge that this special grant goes a long way in assisting the most vulnerable in our society. Therefore we urge all approved clients who have unclaimed funds from the previous cycle to collect them as soon as possible”.
The first round of SRD grant payments was announced in May 2020. The grant was meant to help shield people who had no income during the pandemic, following the subsequent lockdowns that left many people without a way to earn income.
More than 13 million people have applied for the SRD R350 grant within the last three months, as the current cycle of grant payments is set to end in March 2022.
