The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has announced the payment dates for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant for June 2024. While these dates inform beneficiaries of when they will receive their payments, they do not specify the payment amounts.
When the SRD grant was initially introduced in 2020, it provided R350 per beneficiary. However, after four years, the grant amount was increased in April 2024.
June 2024 SRD Grant Payment Amount
In April 2024, the Minister announced a R20 increase in the SRD grant, raising the total value to R370. Therefore, beneficiaries of the SRD grant will receive R370 for their June 2024 payments. Only those whose applications are successful will receive the grant in June.
SRD Grant Eligibility and Application Process
To qualify for the SRD grant, applicants must undergo a multi-step verification process:
- Personal Information Submission: Applicants need to provide their ID number, name, and surname.
- Validation by Home Affairs: This information is validated by the Department of Home Affairs.
- Financial Checks: The applicant's ID number is cross-referenced with databases from the South African Revenue Services (SARS), Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), and National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to assess financial status.
- Fraud Risk Scoring: Both the ID number and mobile number are subjected to a fraud risk scoring process.
- Application Evaluation: Upon completing these checks, Sassa evaluates the application and makes a final decision on approval.
The Future of the SRD Grant
The SRD grant currently supports approximately nine million unemployed adults in South Africa each month.
The government has allocated R33.6 billion to fund the SRD grant until March 2025, with provisional plans suggesting possible extensions through March 2027.
While this indicates a potential long-term commitment, final decisions on funding beyond the 2025/26 fiscal year will be determined in future budgets.
