Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, expressed excitement about the response to the opening of the province's 2025 Online Admissions application system.
The phenomenal number of applications we've received demonstrates the trust parents place in our education system. The Gauteng Department of Education remains committed to providing quality education for all and ensuring a fair and transparent admissions process
Within just six days of the system's launch on 11 July 2024, over 512,000 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 were received. This includes 214,843 Grade 1 applications and 297,394 Grade 8 applications.
The number of applications is expected to grow as the application window remains open until 12 August 2024.
Chiloane urged parents to complete the full five-step application process on the admissions website, warning that incomplete applications will not be processed.
It is crucial to note that incomplete applications will not be processed for placement. Currently, we have identified over 12,000 parents who have not completed the full process
Submitting a Gauteng online admissions application is only complete when parents have uploaded all the required documents. Alternatively, parents can submit physical copies of the required documents at the school they applied to within seven days of applying.
To ensure a smooth application process, parents must either upload certified copies of required documents online or submit them to all selected schools within seven days of application. Online document uploads need to be done only once for all selected schools to view.
Parents are also urged to ensure the information they upload on the GDE admissions website is accurate. Incorrect information could result in parents not receiving placement offers from the department, risking their child's placement at their preferred school in 2025.
We urge all parents to ensure that the cellphone numbers they provide are accurate, as ongoing communication regarding their application will be sent via SMS notifications
The Department added that parents who require assistance or face technological constraints may visit one of the 80 decentralised walk-in centres and all public schools.
The GDE remains committed to assisting parents who may not have the means to apply online. All schools in the province, as well as our 80 Decentralised Walk-In Centres, are available to provide support throughout the application process, ensuring that no child is left behind due to technological constraints
Required Documents for GDE Registration
When registering your child for a public school in Gauteng, the GDE requires the following documents:
- Parent's ID or passport
- The child's birth certificate or passport
- Proof of work address
- Latest Grade 7 school report (for Grade 8 applications)
- Immunisation report
- Proof of home address
Placement Period
The GDE confirmed that the placement period will commence on 16 September 2024 and will continue until all learners are placed. During this time, placement offers will be sent to the parent's cell phone number, and the offer must be accepted within seven days.
The department urged all parents and guardians to adhere to these guidelines and deadlines to ensure a smooth and efficient admission process for their children entering Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2025
