Unisa Will Soon Pay NSFAS Allowances

Thousands of students enrolled at Unisa are yet to receive their first 2024 NSFAS allowance payment. The country's largest university has revealed when allowances will be paid to students.

The University of South Africa (Unisa) announced this week that National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances for students will be paid out starting today. The disbursement process began on 19 March 2024.

This news comes as a welcome relief for NSFAS-funded Unisa students, who were the only university group yet to receive their February 2024 funds. Unisa NSFAS students should expect to receive remittance advice via email, which will confirm the exact amount of their allowance. The allowances themselves should follow within 48 hours.

Unisa emphasised the importance of having accurate bank details on file for timely receipt of NSFAS allowances. All qualifying students are urged to double-check their bank information through the link provided on their myUnisa account to ensure prompt payments.

Unisa Dismisses Fake News Regarding Allowances

The university also took the opportunity to address a misleading social media post circulating online that claimed delays and misuse of NSFAS funds. Unisa denounced the letter as "bogus" and its contents "completely false."

They urged students to rely on official university communication channels for accurate updates on NSFAS allowances.

NSFAS Allowances For Unisa Students

NSFAS funding for students enrolled in distance learning programs, such as those offered by Unisa, is calculated based on registered courses. Students can expect to receive up to R5,460 for learning materials. Additionally, full-time students (enrolled in a minimum of 120 credits) can qualify for an extra R3,045 for personal expenses.

Future NSFAS Payment Changes

While Unisa is facilitating the distribution of February and March allowances, NSFAS will be transitioning back to direct payments starting in April 2024. Students will need to register with the direct payment service providers previously assigned to their institutions.
