A bold step toward digital empowerment is underway. With a R35 million grant from Google.org, WeThinkCode aims to equip 12,000 South African youth with vital Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills. This initiative seeks to close the digital divide and prepare both technical and non-technical youth for careers in the rapidly evolving tech economy.

Overview of the Initiative

  • Funding Partner: Google.org

  • Grant Amount: R35 million

  • Target Beneficiaries: 12,000 South African and Kenyan youth

  • Training Streams:

    • AI for Software Engineers (Technical)

    • AI for Non-Tech Careers (Business, Retail, Government, etc.)

  • Course Duration: 40 to 80 hours

  • Delivery Format: Online and In-Person Hybrid (Location-specific details coming soon)

Why This Matters AI is reshaping industries—from healthcare and finance to logistics and public services. Yet, a significant portion of South Africa's youth remains excluded from this revolution. This program bridges that gap by offering accessible, practical, and in-demand AI education, regardless of technical background.

Who Can Apply?

  • Young people aged 18 to 35

  • To be delivered in South Africa and Kenya

  • Both unemployed youth and employed individuals seeking to upskill

  • No prior coding experience required for the Non-Tech stream

Participant Testimonial (From previous WeThinkCode initiatives)

Key Outcomes Expected

  • 12,000 youth trained in AI basics and practical use-cases

  • Job readiness for both tech-specific and general workplace roles

  • National digital capability uplift through inclusive education
