The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is set to provide a much-needed boost to millions of beneficiaries with an increase in social grants from October.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the grant adjustments during the 2024 Budget Speech in February. Recognizing the escalating cost of living and the reliance of nearly 19 million South Africans on these grants, the government has implemented Sassa increases where possible within budgetary constraints.
Sassa Grant Increases
Several SASSA grants will receive a R10 increase from October, these include:
- Old Age grant (under 75 years old)
- Old Age grant (over 75 years old)
- Disability grant
- War Veterans grant
- Care Dependency grant
- Child Support grant top-up
Unfortunately, the Child Support grant and Foster Care grants will remain unchanged.
Updated Grant Amounts
Following the October increase, the new grant amounts will be:
- Older Persons grant: R2,190
- Older Persons (75 years and older): R2,210
- Disability grant: R2,190
- War Veterans grant: R2,210
- Child Support grant: R530
- Child Support grant (Top-up): R790
- Care Dependency grant: R2,190
- Foster Care grant: R1,180
- SRD Grant: R370
The Department of Social Development has allocated a total of R387.3 billion for social grants, with the largest portions dedicated to the Old Age grant, social security funds, Child Support grants, and other grants.
These Sassa increases aim to offer some relief to grant recipients as they grapple with rising living costs.
