The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) is organising a workshop aimed at finding ways to take Knowledge Management (KM) to a higher level.

KM is one of the learning platforms established by the department in strengthening the notion of the learning organisation within the public service.

The objectives of the workshop, to be held on 2 March, include sharing practical tools and techniques to improve KM in the public service, enriching the production and creation of KM learning products and platforms.

The department said one of the challenges in the public service is an in-depth understanding and implementation of KM.

The Knowledge Management Learning Network was launched in 2003 with the ultimate goal of entrenching a culture of knowledge management in government.

It also aims to put mechanisms and systems in place to drive knowledge management.

Themed ‘Learning from each other to improve productivity’, the workshop is targeted at KM practitioners from the public service, KM managers from the public service and service delivery practitioners from the public service.

In February 2008, the department organised a successful KM learning network with the aim of promoting it within the public service.

The workshop will also focus on the resolutions taken during last year’s event and to further pave the way for the years ahead.

The purpose of the network is to provide a platform for people in service delivery to explore and reach an understanding on the importance of KM in the business of government, particularly service delivery, to establish a common understanding of the area in the context of the knowledge economy.

It also aims to share various interpretations of and initiatives in implementing KM programmes and to keep public servants abreast of global developments in the field of knowledge management.
