    In an effort to create a pool of highly competent housing professionals, the Department of Housing is offering matriculants scholarships in the field.

    The National Housing Scholarship Programme is aimed as meeting the demands of South Africa’s complex housing environment, the capacity requirements and the need for more competent housing professionals.

    The scholarship programme, which has been in operation for two years, invites well-performing pupils from previously disadvantaged backgrounds from around the country to apply.

    The department’s Deputy Director General, Joseph Leshabane said the outcome of the programme was to produce a cadre of highly competent housing practitioners and professionals.

    He said the programme was in line with the objectives of National Skills Development Strategy as well as Accelerated Shared and Growth Initiative in South Africa (AsgiSA) which aims to halve unemployment and poverty by 2014.

    Successful students are required to enter into a bursary agreement with the department where they commit to participating in vocational work during their studies.

    They will also enter into a service contract on completion of their studies.

    Those pupils wishing to apply for the bursaries must supply the following information:

    · A completed application form;

    · Proof of their financial status (either a salary slip from their parents, proof of unemployment or a sworn affidavit);

    · A short CV with at least two references and their telephone numbers;

    · A certified copy of their June/December matric results;

    · A certified copy of Identity Document; and

    · A stamped or signed recommendation letter from your school.

    Interested students can forward their applications by post before 31 October 2008. Applications can be obtained at the national offices in Pretoria, at any provincial housing offices or from the national government website.
