    Di Gordon

Di Gordon who lost her teenage daughter, Melissa Jade to cancer last year, said she wanted to do something different and special for her 50th birthday. “My husband was planning an elaborate party for me, but because I felt strongly that I wanted to give, rather than just receive this year, primarily to honour my daughter, who was a very generous person, I decided to trade a big party for a different kind of celebration – the kind that really has meaning and impact on others’ lives,” said Di.

She heard about Christel House through long-time friend Brett Archibald, who is also an active fundraiser and loyal supporter to the school. “The school really impressed me – sharing my birthday with them just felt right,” she said.

Di explained that she also had lots of help. She received financial contributions from her colleagues, a donation from the company in lieu of fancy extra’s at their annual Christmas function and together with her own contribution they raised R35 000 to throw the special party at CHSA.”

The children were happy, they were treated to cupcakes and each child received gift-bags filled with more treats, something to play with and a few other practical amenities, like soap and toothpaste. Di and her colleagues also sponsored 150 food hampers to the learners that won’t have much to eat during the holiday period.

Director of Marketing and Development at CHSA, Sharon Williams commented that the meals and snacks that learners receive at the school are often the only food they will get to eat for the day. “Di found out about this and wanted to make sure these learners could enjoy their holiday break without having to worry about being hungry. We extend our sincerest thanks to her and her colleagues at Leisure Options,” she said.

As Di blew out her candles with the learners singing a very loud and excited rendition of Happy Birthday – huge smiles was the order of the day and both Di and the kids left feeling that this festive season was going to be one to remember.

“I’m happy I got to celebrate my birthday with these beautiful, talented and deserving children. It made me realise that giving really does make a difference, whether you give a little or a lot.
