PPC equips learners for the future

Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC) has joined forces to play a meaningful role in equipping South African youth with the opportunity to receive career guidance, through the programme My Future, My Career, which will take place from the 26th February to 29th April 2012, at Ster Kinekor cinemas.

The objective of the initiative is to expose as many Grade nine to 12 learners, particularly previously disadvantaged individuals to various career disciplines ranging from Accounting, Arts and Culture, Construction, Communication, Entrepreneurship to Transport Logistics and Distribution, amongst others. These sessions allow students to make informed career decisions and achieve their highest potential.

“At PPC, education is one of our key focus areas, primarily aimed at ensuring that communities in which we operate are being developed. As a result, we requested schools in our surrounding areas to be included; a school from Mamelodi, which is close to the PPC Hercules plant, and students from the Star Schools in Western Cape,” says Francie Shonhiwa, Corporate Social Investment Manager at PPC.

The programme has successfully been in operation for three years and is supported by Nedbank, The Department of Education, The Gauteng City Region Academy, JD Group, Quest Staffing Solutions, National Youth Development Agency and Primestars Marketing, amongst others.

Each session guides learners on subjects required for the specific field, the minimum university admission requirements, benefits of entering a specific career field, and advice from industry experts. If students require further information, they will be provided with a handbook for future reference.

“It is through initiatives like My Future, My Career where our future leaders, artists and engineers are inspired and created. PPC keeps close ties to the schools and uses this opportunity to engage with the learners about the PPC bursary programme,” concludes Shonhiwa.
