    Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said that business and government, working together, can succeed in overcoming the challenges facing education.

    The Deputy President, together with the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga and Deputy Minister Surty, spoke to South African business at a breakfast meeting in Johannesburg on 29 November 2010.

    "As we are already doing in other sectors we can succeed in overcoming the challenges facing us in education if we work together”, said the Deputy President.

    He said that among the steps that need to be taken in dealing with the challenges include:

    • developing a social partnership to improve the education system;
    • continued vital contribution towards improving facilities and infrastructure especially in rural and township schools;
    • contribution towards adult education; and
    • bursaries and scholarships for needy students and teacher development.

    The Deputy President said that the success of this partnership will be measured by noticeable improvements in the identified areas of need.
