    Western Cape schools re-open

About 80 percent of schools in the Western Cape re-opened on Monday, with approximately 80 000 learners starting Grade 1.

Schools in the province started two days earlier than the official re-opening of schools in the coastal provinces, after the provincial Education Department gave schools the option to open earlier so that they can close on 28 and 29 April, between two long weekends.

“The department decided to offer this option because many learners would probably be absent on 28 and 29 April. This arrangement will maximize teaching and learning time,” said department MEC Donald Grant, adding that the remainder of schools will open on Wednesday.

Today, Grant will be visiting a number of schools in the Cape Town region to assess school readiness for the 2011 school year.

Among the schools to be visited include Golden Grove Primary School, where Grant will be handing out a Western Cape Education Department Parents’ Guide to the parents of Grade 1 learners.

The guide welcomes parents and their children to Grade 1 and includes some suggestions on what parents must do to support their child in the first year of school.

It provides a snapshot of the language and mathematics syllabi and how parents can help their children in these subjects.

It also includes information on what children must know and be able to do by the end of Grade1 and recommended reading lists.
