Corporal Punishment
Second teacher suspended for corporal punishment
Mon, 01 Aug 2011 10:43
A second teacher from Diversity High School in Johannesburg has been placed on precautionary suspension by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).
The teacher was caught on camera using corporal punishment on a learner, which is outlawed in South Africa.
Last week, another official at the same school was put on precautionary suspension for hitting a learner. The incident was filmed on a cell phone by another learner.
The cell phone video footage showed the educator beating a Grade 8 learner with a piece of hosepipe for arriving late at school. It also showed him kicking the learner while he was lying on the ground.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Charles Phahlane said the department was horrified by the images on the video footage.
The GDE has appointed an independent legal firm to investigate disciplinary issues at Diversity. The probe will also seek to establish whether the incidents were isolated or not.
The results of the investigation will be made public as soon as it is concluded. - BuaNews
