Pupils from schools in Limpopo, Gauteng, Free State, North West and Mpumalanga will this week participate in the annual Learner Focus Week aimed at raising awareness about career opportunities in the mining industry and government.

Companies such as De Beers, Lonmin, Rio Tinto, Sasol Mining, Total, Anglo-American, Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC), Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA), PetroSA and Mintek will be presenting career and job opportunities to participating learners.

The initiative targets about 50 learners per province. This means that between 200 and 250 learners, accompanied by two educators per school, will be participating in the Learners’ Focus Week.

According to a statement from the Department of Mineral Resources the programme is aimed at enhancing training and career development in the fields of geosciences, environmental studies, chemistry, information and natural sciences, amongst others.

“The programme will also encourage learners to study mathematics and science to enable them to take up technical, engineering and research studies at tertiary level,” said the department.

This year’s Learner Focus Week will take place from 27 to 29 September in Polokwane, Limpopo, hosted by the Department of Mineral Resources, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and stakeholders in the mining industry. BuaNews
