The Basic Education Department has expressed its satisfaction with the progress of 2010 National Senior Certificate examination, which so far recorded the least number of challenges.

The department said that since the exams started three weeks ago, no irregularities have occurred which are of a nature that threatens the integrity of its processes. Only minor technical and administrative challenges have been reported.

“For example, a few learners have arrived late, have forgotten their examination numbers or have fallen ill during the examinations. However, the examination system has been strengthened to such an extent that no learners have been disadvantaged.

“The department has acted swiftly to ensure that any administration irregularities have been resolved quickly and the examination process is running smoothly,” the department said on Wednesday.

A wide variety of papers, including Mathematics, English and Afrikaans, have been written since the exams started.

The department described this year’s exams as the largest examination conducted in South Africa since 1996, with more than 642 000 candidates enrolled.

The exams will be completed on 03 December 2010 and all provinces have reported readiness for the commencement of marking.

The results will be announced on 06 January 2011. BuaNews
