Emerging leaders learn the trade

The Emerging Leaders Programme (ELP) has been designed with todays business environment challenges in mind. The programme aims to create exceptional leaders through intensive and challenging leadership awareness experiences, it contains a mentoring and coaching support component; along with experiential learning opportunities which will the crystallize leadership potential of individuals and managers, while initiating a life-long journey of self-directed leadership development.
NMMU Business School announced the development and launch of the education programme offering for South African businesses , the Emerging Leaders Programme, aimed at new comers to managerial positions or individuals earmarked for future leadership positions. The programme is available to national companies and organizations in South Africa, and was attended by around 50 HR guests from multinational organizations in South Africa at event hosted in Port Elizabeth.
Says Leon Mouton, Leadership Academy Director at NMMU Business School:
One of the unique differentiating features of our programme is our understanding and view of leadership development as a powerful and personal awareness journey driven by self-directed learning. To create this personal awareness a 360 degree feedback instrument The Leadership Practises Inventory (CPI) is used. The programme pays attention to personal leadership as the DNA of all future development, and leading others as the instrument of leadership success of team and organizational performance in the context of leadership practice.
NMMU Business Schools Emerging Leadership Programme (ELP) is designed for managers and leaders to build confidence and managerial character through self-knowledge; to build committed and inspired teams; to manage employee performance effectively; to manage conflict at both a team and organisational level; to continually inspire their teams during the ever-changing environment of work; to become a resilient leader in uncertain times.
The programme is presented over a nine month period. In the first three months students complete a literature review, perform self assessment and establish a virtual learning community. This is followed by a five day contact session during the fourth month. Self-directed readings, personal learning, coaching and mentoring take place during the three months, and in the last month students submit a project that they implemented.
The programme during the five days of contact includes: Management and the Changing World of Work, Resilience in Leadership; Innovative Thinking and Mental Models, Alignment and Execution; as well as Team Leadership in the Modern Organization.
