    Confusion over Jimmy Manyi's suspension

The Labour Department spokesman confirmed on Friday 4th June that Director General Jimmy Manyi had been suspended from his position. He declined to give reasons for the move saying that the matter was 'sub judice'.

This suggests that the matter is before the courts, however there is no independent evidence of this and it seems more likely that it is an excuse to avoid giving more details to the media.

The Sunday Times reported that Manyi had wanted to release a report by KPMG that allegedly uncovered fraud in the Department of Labour. Minister Mdadlana has denied this, claiming rather that Manyi would not release the report despite instructions to do so.

The Democratic Alliance has welcomed the suspension. Member of parliament Ian Ollis said the DA had raised concerns over Manyi's dual roles as DG and president of the Black Management Forum (BMF) because the two represented "potential conflict of interest and would lead to a blurring of the line of his responsibilities".

The Labour Department has given Manyi 48 hours to make representation on why his suspension should not be made permanent.

Jimmy Manyi was previously employed as a Director by Tiger Brands and he heads the Commission for Employment Equity. He is currently serving his second term as head of the Black Management Forum.
