In its June Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey, Stats SA said the number of people employed in the non-agricultural sector of the economy rose by 0.1% from an estimated 8 289 000 employees in March 2011 to an estimated 8 296 000 people in June 2011.

According to the survey, employment in the formal non-agricultural sector increased with an estimated 8 296 000 people employed in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy. This is an increase of about 164 000 workers compared with June 2010’s estimated 8 132 000 employees.

“The gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended June 2011 (April 2011 to June 2011) amounted to R324 273 million. This reflects an annual increase of R27 914 million (9.4%) compared with the quarter ended June 2010 (April 2010 to June 2010).”

The June survey reflected an annual increase of 5% in average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector between May 2010 (an estimated R11 570) and May 2011 (an estimated R12 143). - BuaNews
