Credit checks prevent people from getting jobs - Workseeker

Quoted from Cosatu Today 25 July 2010

    Work seeker

I just thought I'd write to inform COSATU about the difficulties people are having in finding employment after the financial situation our country has been in.

Companies at present are conducting credit checks on applicants and refusing them work if their credit record is tarnished, being that we were hit by one the biggest recessions since the great depression how can they expect anyone currently unemployed to have a good credit record. No work how can you afford to pay your bills.

What does a credit record have to do with one's capabilities, if they are worries about the trust issue then a criminal record check should be sufficient. I mean if one has been unemployed for so long and not needed to commit crime to sustain ones self then what fear should employers have.

I am currently struggling having to work as a temp for a fraction of the remuneration for what i am trained for and can't afford to pay all of my bills. If Government could restrict companies from doing credit check for a period equal to the period of the recession then I'm sure it would impact the amount of employments.

Please place pressure on government to help the people we need to work.
