Mpumalanga recruits over 4 000 new employees

The Mpumalanga provincial government has this year recruited 4 054 new employees which has reduced the vacancy rate by more than 40 percent in the province.

The provincial government previously had 10 115 vacant posts.

In a bid to speed up the process of filling up the remaining vacancies, the provincial Cabinet took a decision to employ the services of private sector recruitment agencies.

To date more than five agencies have been appointed to assist provincial departments with the recruitment of staff.

The provincial departments have on average filled 70 percent of their vacant posts, with about seven departments, out of a total of ten, filling within the average of 80 – 100 percent.

In his State of the Nation Address in February, President Thabo Mbeki announced June as the deadline for the filling of all vacant posts.

The provincial Department of Safety and Security already has a 100 percent staff compliment.

The challenge, however, still remains in the bigger and specialised departments such as Education, Health and Social Development, where scarce professional skills are required.

The provincial government has therefore set itself a target by the end of August to comply with the President’s call.

“High vacancy rates and inadequate skills in the public sector have often been sighted as one of the key reasons that delays service delivery,” said provincial spokesperson Ntime Skosana.

“The filling of vacant posts in the province forms part of on going interventions aimed at improving service delivery and reducing unemployment, particularly among the youth.”
