    Flexi-working: A tempting career choice

Kelly introduced flexi-staffing to South Africa for the first time in 1969 and how the face of this flexible career choice has changed since then.

Historically flexi-workers were contracted to undertake lower skill clerical positions, however you will now find a range of flexi staff in entry level to professional positions across all industries.

Gayleen Baxter Chief Operating Officer of Kelly says “A flexible and efficient employee is what companies are demanding in their search for an optimal return on the investment in their human capital".

"Productivity is the driving force behind employment and companies are realising the benefits of outsourcing non-core staffing as they re-engineer to cope with today’s changing business demands".

"By including a flexible staffing model in their human resource mix, companies are benefiting from optimal productivity and cost-effectiveness.”

According to Baxter, the demand is for multi-skilled competence complimented by soft skills to meet the needs of an increasingly ‘communication-centred’ workplace.

The ability to multi-task and deal with internal and external customers are skills that are particularly in demand. Good speech articulation and other language skills, public relations abilities and a solid work ethic are attributes highly sought after.

Moreover, flexi-working has been embraced as a great career option that offers choice and opens doors to a variety of career opportunities. More and more students and entry-level professionals are realising the benefits of flexi-working.

“You never know who is paying attention to your work ethic or job performance, or what positive opportunities can come out of the assignment” says Chanome Cavalerio, Kelly Associate (flexi-worker).

For those job seekers that haven’t been introduced to the world of flexi-working yet, Baxter offers the following benefits of this flexible career choice as reasons to consider flexi-working as a career:

    * Flexi-working is a great way to get your foot in the door with a top company and try out that position to determine if it's the right fit for you * You can showcase your talent while evaluating potential employers * Flexi-working provides great networking opportunities in diverse industries * You will be given the opportunity to develop a range of multiple skills while keeping up to date on the latest technology and skills trends * With Kelly as your employer, you will be offered the same or similar benefits as a permanent employee * You have choice and flexibility

Baxter says that many companies are still using Kelly to employ temporary employees in their traditional format - to assist with work overload during busy periods and to fill-in whilst permanent staff are on leave. As a result she says that flexi-working is not only a great option for university and college students that are busy with their studies but also for working mom’s that require the flexibility and choice that comes with short-term assignments. “It is important to remember that flexi-workers who are self-motivated and adaptable are the ones that do exceptionally well at all our clients – so I encourage all job seekers considering flexi-working to adopt these traits. But, remember you will need to commit to lifelong learning; take time to sharpen those skills, polish your image and smooth out your communications flair". "Improving these aspects will increase your marketability. A new world of opportunity awaits those job seekers who are tempted to think ‘out-the-box’ and embrace the changing world of work” concludes Baxter.
